Why Support Gun Ownership?

As a progressive Democrat, I believe in free choice in as many things as possible and freedom to be an individual in living our lives. I extend that freedom to others without prejudice and I desire that others extend it to me. This includes the right to defend myself and my home and family if necessary, even with firearms.
I believe in this right, I support others who chose to use it and I expect that those who consider themselves "liberals" of any degree extend the right of choice to all others. Even if you "hate guns" do not restrict my freedom of choice for that reason. You have the right NOT to own or use or even like guns - I choose to own and use them. We must honor each other's choices and not fall into the division our political enemies seek to sow among us using guns and hatred of guns as their lever.

Thank you for reading.

Democrats for Gun Ownership First and foremost, because it is our constitutional right. As such, it is constantly having to weather the vagaries of a fickle political system that, for one reason or another finds it politically expedient to ignore, abuse, or marginalize our individual and collective rights.

People easily see the value of, and wholeheartedly support, the First Amendment, even when they have nothing to speak out against. Many of those same people, our fellow Democrats in particular, don’t apply that same logic to the Second Amendment. They don’t want to own a gun, so they are not particularly concerned about protecting anyone else’s right to do so. Because of this, a threat to our Second Amendment rights is not treated with the same immediate, impassioned, and vociferous attention as a threat to our First Amendment rights.

This indifference to our constitutional protections will only change as Democrats come to understand that the Second Amendment exists largely, if not solely, to defend and protect the First. We intend to arm our fellow Democrats with the knowledge and understanding that while many of us choose not to bear arms, we support, and will fight for, our rights to do so.
