WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court reversed a ruling upholding Chicago's ban today and extended the reach of the 2nd Amendment as a nationwide protection against laws that infringe the "right to keep and bear arms."

The 5-4 decision appears to void the 1982 ordinance, one of the nation's strictest that barred city residents from having handguns for their own use, even at home.

Two years ago, the high court ruled in a case from Washington, D.C. that the 2nd Amendment protects the rights of individuals to have a gun for self-defense. Since the District is a federal city and not a state, the court did not decide then whether the 2nd Amendment could be used to challenge other municipal ordinances or state laws.

Weapons in as many as 100,000 [Chicago] homes, report says

By Duaa Eldeib, Tribune reporter

It is unfortunate, that when the highest court in our land shines the light of justice, and reaffirms the rights of law-abiding citizens to own firearms, that the political roaches scurry for the protection of bureaucracy. They are bound and determined to violate the rights of the very people who put them in office.

That's just what we need - a government even more mired, sluggish, and useless. Here's a suggestion Eleanor Holmes Norton - spend more time figuring out how to increase emergency response times in D.C. and less time trying to thwart the United States Judiciary and your own citizens. And please, don't assume that just because someone is a Democrat, they are lock-step with your uninformed agenda. Go to demguns.org and arm yourself with knowledge.

I was recently asked to respond to a press conference held by Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago, regarding his constant attempts to infringe the rights of law abiding gun owners. What follows is my opinion of the issue.

Richard M. Daley’s understanding of guns, gun ownership, and their relationship to crime and public safety is either seriously flawed or his plans for even more sweeping gun control laws are a disingenuous political attempt to have his public pay attention to his left hand, while his right hand bargains away more parcels of public property. Unfortunately, I believe it is the latter.
